JST and NEDO Announced Winners of the Award for Academic Startups 2024

Who were Winners of Japanese University Startups 2024?

Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) and New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) have announced the winners of the "Award for Academic Startups 2024" This award system aims to promote entrepreneurship based on research and development results from universities, encourage challenging initiatives after startup, and foster support from universities and companies for academic startups. This year, eight outstanding university-launched startups with high potential for future success, along with the universities and companies that contributed to their growth, were selected for awards.

The "Award for Academic Startups 2024," jointly organized by NEDO and JST, was established in 2014. It recognizes excellent university-launched startups with promising futures and honors the universities and companies that have significantly contributed to their growth.

The purpose of this award is to further promote entrepreneurship using research and development results from universities, encourage challenging initiatives after startup, and foster support from universities and companies for academic startups.

This year's application period ran from April 1 to May 14, 2024, receiving 46 entries. The winners were selected through document screening and interviews conducted by the selection committee, composed of external experts.

  • Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award: QuEL Inc.
    Supporting University: Osaka University, Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Life Science

  • Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award: Sonia Therapeutics Inc.
    Supporting University: Tohoku University, Graduate School of Engineering, Supporting Company: Hirata Corporation
  • JST President Award: Ecumenopolis, Inc.
    Supporting University: Waseda University, Green Computing Systems Research Organization, Perceptual Computing Laboratory
  • NEDO President Award: AWL Inc.
    Supporting University: Hokkaido University, Graduate School of Information Science and Technology
